Welcome

The International Conference on Smart Monitoring, Assessment and Rehabilitation of Civil Structures, SMAR 2019, will provide a forum for international scientists, engineers, enterprisers and infrastructure managers to present and discuss the state-of-the-practice and recent advances in testing and monitoring technology, in structural modelling and assessment methods, and in the application of advanced materials for structural rehabilitation. The conference will provide a platform for exploring the potential of international cooperation.

SMAR 2019 is the fifth conference and will be sponsored jointly by the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM), Germany, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa), Switzerland, the Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Turkey, the International Society for Structural Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructure (ISHMII), the International Institute of FRP in Construction (IIFC), the International Association for Bridge Maintance and Safety (IABMAS), RILEM and Sensors – Open Access Journal.

Mirko Roš award for the best papers

The Mirko Ros Award will be announced to 

  • 1 paper in the field of “monitoring and assessment” and
  • 1 paper in the field of “rehabilitation of civil structure"

Selected best papers will be proposed for publication in a Journal Special Issue of the Polymer Journal (online, open access) or in the Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering (Springer) or in the Journal Engineering Structures (Elsevier), dedicated to SMAR 2019 conference.

Visa required?

Visitors for many non-EU countries need a visa.

You should apply immediately to the German consular office or embassy in your country in order to avoid delay and other inconveniences. The visa application procedure can take up to severeal months.

We assist you by processing an official invitation letter on request. Therefore we need the following information:

After payment of the registration fee, we will process your request for issuing the official invitation. We will send it to you by e-mail. If you need the hard copy of the invitation letter by express delivery service, we will charge a service fee of 50.- €.

Conference Chairs

Dr. Rosemarie Helmerich
BAM, Germany

is a senior researcher at the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM), Berlin, Germany, and a lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences, Potsdam. She is a guest lecturer at Fuzhou University, Fuzhou, China, Sustainable and Innovative Bridge Engineering Research Center (SIBERC), China. Rosemarie received her Engineering diploma from Slovak Technical University Bratislava, Slovakia and her doctoral degree from Wroclaw University of Technology, Poland. She has been active in several fields of engineering research reaching from fatigue testing to non-destructive testing. The field of activity was national, but in many cases international, e.g. in the European integrated cooperation projects Sustainable Bridges, CHEF and SmartEN or as member of the advisory committee in the European railway project MAINLINE. Prof. Alper Ilki
Istanbul Technical University, Turkey

is a professor of structural engineering at Istanbul Technical University. The main theme of his academic studies is the seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete and masonary structures, as well as seismic design, assessment and retrofitting. He is the author or co-author of more than 40 international journal papers and more than 150 international conference papers. He has supervised 11 completed PhD theses and more than 50 MSc theses. Other than acting as a reviewer or guest editor for more than 40 international reputable scientific journals, he is associate editor or editorial board member of Bulletin of New Zealand Society of Earthquake Engineering, International Journal of Civil Structural Health Monitoring, Arabian Journal of Science for Engineering and Technical Journal of Chamber of Civil Engineers, among few others. He also co-edited two international books published by Springer titled Seismic Risk Assessment and Retrofitting, and  Seismic Evaluation and Rehabilitation of Structures. Prof. Masoud Motavalli
Empa, Switzerland

is the head of the Structural Engineering Research Laboratory at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Material Science and Technology, EMPA and lecturer at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH-Zurich. He is a professor at the University of Tehran, Iran, Faculty of Civil Engineering, as well as adjunct professor at the Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. He organised or co-organised several successful international conferences, such as CICE2008 in Zurich, SHMII2009 in Zurich, SMAR2011 in Dubai, SMAR2013 in Istanbul, SMAR2015 in Antalya and SMAR2017 in Zurich.
